Columbus Ave. busway

Over the course of the pandemic, the MBTA in association with the City of Boston built a busway along a stretch of Columbus Ave. between Seaver St. and Jackson Square. The busway, which replaced general-traffic lanes and parking, added high-quality passenger amenities at each stop, and was estimated to save riders of the 22, 23, and 44 buses as much as five minutes of traffic delays. Planning is currently underway to extend the busway north along Columbus Ave. and Tremont St. to Ruggles station.

From the west side of Columbus Ave. at the Bray St. crosswalk we can get a good wide-angle view of the inbound station, the design of which is typical for all of the stops on the busway.

Note the raised platfform with tactile edging, real-time departure display, emergency call box, clear stop identification, and benches — better than some Green Line stops! The platform is 60 feet long, sufficient for an articulated bus.

Note how the auto traffic has been restricted to a single lane, with no parking, allowing the buses to berth withouty having to cross traffic. Emergency vehicles can also use the busway.

Note the traffic controls restricting turns across the busway — which the motorcyclist evidently chose to ignore.

Looking south along the inbound platform towards Washington St. Due to the need for left-turn bays at Washington, there is no bus stop there; instead, there are stops on either side, here and at Weld Ave.

The busway uses a variety of unique traffic controls, including transit-specific traffic signals and lane use signs indicating the presence of a straight-through bus lane to the left of the left-turn lane.
